What If Your Baby Is More Interested in the Cake Smash Setup?
Sometimes the cake isn’t what gets a baby’s attention first. I’ve photographed babies who were far more interested in balloons, a race car prop, butterflies, safari animals, cowboy details, or other parts of the cake smash setup than the cake sitting directly in front of them.
After photographing hundreds of first birthday sessions, I’ve learned not to immediately redirect that attention. Those interactions can give me some of the most expressive photographs because the baby is genuinely interested in what they see.
A baby might:
- Wave or point at balloons

- Spend several minutes studying the setup
- Return to the cake once their curiosity is satisfied
