For posed sessions, I prepare wraps, outfits, headbands, props, and styling before the family arrives. Full newborn sessions typically include approximately 7–8 setups, while mini newborn sessions are designed around 3–4 simpler wrapped setups. Having everything prepared ahead of time allows the session to move more smoothly while still leaving room to adjust if the baby needs a different approach.
Preparing for a Newborn Photoshoot Before Your Baby Arrives
Much of the work begins before the actual session date. Families typically reserve their due date during pregnancy, and the final date is scheduled after the baby arrives.
Before a newborn photoshoot in Dallas, a photographer should also help parents understand:
- When the session will be scheduled
- What to bring to the studio
- How feeding breaks are handled
- Whether props and wraps are provided

A full Dallas newborn photography session may include wrapped images, posed setups, close-up details, different angles, and parent or sibling photos when included. Those images are not all photographed one after another without interruption.
A baby may need to be fed between setups, soothed back to sleep, changed, or simply given a few minutes to settle. I would rather slow the session down than rush through setups simply to stay on a predetermined schedule.

The photographer’s role continues after the family leaves the studio. Newborn images often require detailed editing that goes beyond basic color correction. Temporary redness, flaky skin, minor scratches, uneven skin tones, and other normal newborn details may need careful attention while still keeping the baby looking natural.
Editing also includes maintaining consistency across the entire gallery so that skin tones, backgrounds, and overall color remain cohesive. For my sessions, parents receive proofs and select their favorites before the final images are completed. This allows families to choose the photographs they want rather than having the photographer make every selection for them.
