Rich Colors and Textures for a Studio Newborn Session
Marlee settled comfortably into her session, which gave us time to work through several different setups without rushing. Her gallery included deeper jewel tones, warm florals, textured layers, and softer neutral elements for contrast.
For this type of studio newborn photography, I pay attention to how each color photographs against a baby’s skin rather than simply choosing props because they look good on their own. Deep emerald, burgundy, and warm floral tones gave Marlee’s gallery more depth while lighter wraps kept some of the setups simple.
Small details also helped create variety, including:
- Coordinating wraps and headbands
- Floral accents in several color palettes
- Textured blankets and layers
- Baby-focused setups with minimal distractions
- Different angles within the same setup
This allows a full newborn gallery to have variety without every photograph needing a completely different theme.
Why Newborn Sessions Are Adjusted to Each Baby
Even when a newborn arrives sleepy, I never assume the entire session will move at the same pace. Babies may wake between setups, need to feed, or prefer one position over another. During Marlee’s newborn photoshoot in Dallas, I was able to move between wrapped and posed setups based on how she was settling. If a baby becomes uncomfortable in a particular position, I adjust the pose or move on rather than trying to force the setup.
That flexibility is an important part of photographing newborns and one of the reasons I leave enough time in a full session for feeding, soothing, and transitions.

Posed newborn sessions take place in my private Rowlett studio, where wraps, outfits, headbands, props, and styling pieces are provided. Full sessions generally include approximately 7–8 setups, with time built in for feeding and soothing as needed.
